The Flags of Love Committee will hold a 40th anniversary recognition ceremony at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, November 11th, Veterans Day, to commemorate and recognize the folks that were involved in the original Flags of Love Project. Of those, only Leland Tweed Mummert, Robert Anstine and William Wayland are still with us and we will be honoring them with a plaque of recognition to celebrate what would be the 40th year of the Flags of Love. Everyone is encouraged to attend this event. There will be a brief ceremony at the Gazebo in Chandler Park at 3:45 p.m., immediately before the Flags of Love will come down for the final time this calendar year. In the event the Flags of Love are not flown due to weather conditions, the ceremony will take place at 3:45 in the Community Room of Macomb City Hall.
“The Flags of Love Committee, as well as the City of Macomb, feels it is important to recognize this significant milestone in this patriotic community endeavor,” said Macomb Mayor Mike Inman. “Mr. Mummert, Mr. Anstine and Mr. Wayland were instrumental in the formation of this project in 1977, and we think it is appropriate to recognize them on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of, what is now, more than 800 flags flying in this project,” Inman added.
