Recent changes have been adopted by the Macomb City Council in regard to SNOW and ICE removal from sidewalks. As contained in Ordinance 15-35, adopted by the City Council of the City of Macomb, in an effort to maintain safe and passable pedestrian sidewalk areas in zones that have been identified as either having high pedestrian traffic or being an area where safe and passable sidewalks was of great importance, being the School Zones, there is a mandate that property owners of these parcels that abut or front on a paved sidewalk, must remove the snow and treat the ice, if necessary.
If there is a snow event, being 3 inches of snow or more, or an ice event, then the Public Works Director shall declare a snow event mandating snow removal of sidewalks in the abatement zones. The Director will issue a statement to the City Clerk who will post the information on the City’s website, facebook page, and forward the statement to local radio stations and television stations. Property owners within the abatement zones will have 24 hours to remove the snow and ice following the public announcement. If the property owner does not remove the snow and ice then the City shall have the snow and ice removed and will bill the property owner for the cost of the removal.
PLEASE contact the Building and Zoning Office at the number listed below, prior to a snow or ice event if you feel you are without an ability to have the snow or ice removed and the City shall attempt to aid in suggesting alternate sources for complying with the snow and ice removal requirements.
The sidewalk is to be cleared of snow for a width of at least 48 inches or if the sidewalk is lesser than 48 inches in width then the entire width. If the snow or ice has become too hard to remove then the property owner responsible shall apply sand or other abrasive material to make pedestrian travel on the sidewalk reasonably safe. When conditions do not allow for the complete removal of ice and snow, the property owner shall remove the remaining ice and snow as soon as temperatures make removal possible.
All the information can be found in the City of Macomb’s Municipal Code Sections 20-54 through 20-57. The Municipal Code is available online or in the City Clerk’s office.
