On November 29, 1930 at 11:30 PM, William Edwin Vrell, a car thief and burglar from Canton, IL, shot and killed Macomb Police Officers J. Edward “Opie” Whittlesey, Albert links, and Ernest E. “cotton” Bowman and wounded Officer Luther Jackson.  Bowman, although mortally wounded, was able to kill Vrell.  In less than three minutes, one of the most tragic chapters of Macomb’s history was written.
